Women working for NRHM scheme resign under ‘mysterious’ circumstances
Families seek LG Manoj Sinha’s intervention

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 28: A number of young women working under a nationwide scheme run by the National Rural Health Mission have resigned citing “ill-treatment and humiliation” by the higher officials putting question mark on the working of the NRHM in Jammu and Kashmir.
A delegation of educated women, who recently tendered their resignations, said they were working as “Arogya Mitra” which is a kind of data entry operator for the NRHM scheme at the LD Hospital in Srinagar.
The women said, “We’re facing misbehavior and other ill-treatment from our bosses and this humiliation had become intolerable so we decided to resign from the work. For us being unemployed and facing hunger was the only option left but not to work in such inhuman environment where we were forced to work like bonded-labor in violation of norms,” the aggrieved said.
The women said apart from misbehavior they were being forced to work in violation of labour laws.
“We were hired as Data Entry Operators on contract basis through a private outsourcing agency on the monthly honourarim to work in valley hospitals. But our working hours continued from morning till late in the evening when it was difficult to find public transport for travel back home,” the women said on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile a delegation of the affected parents said NRHM officials set a bad precedence by not looking into the reasons as to why their wards resigned.
“In a country where honorable Prime Minister has been prompting womancipation through slogans like Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao, in Jammu and Kashmir these babus didn’t bother to look into such a serious issues as to why our daughters resigned, despite the matter being brought to their notice,” the parents said.
“It doesn’t matter whether the girls were working through some outsourcing agency or directly in government , the point is that they were working inside a government premises and for the government project. How can any official be so callous towards such a sensitive issue or have they taken things for granted?” asked a parent alleging that even though the matter was brought into the notice of the concerned no action was taken.
Despite repeated attempts, the MD NRHM was not available for comments.
When contacted a lower rung official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, downplayed the issue. “I guess that work has been outsourced... Will look into it,” he said.
Meanwhile the aggrieved appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to personally look into the matter and order an inquiry.
