Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 31: The visually impaired children of Blind School Roop Nagar today held a protest in front of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) demanding allotment of land adjacent to their school for a playground.
While talking to the protesting children, they were informed that their blind school has a hostel facility but it has no playground.
“In this connection the school administration had approached the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) demanding allotment of land adjacent to their school for playground purpose and V-C JDA had agreed upon it but later it was informed that the land has been allotted for greenery to JMC but shockingly, JMC started construction of animal hospital on it,” said Taniya Mehra, a student of blind school.
She said that already an animal hospital is running there, which emanates a foul smell making it difficult to move out and stand nearby it.
We have been demanding that land should be allotted to Blind School for playground purpose.
Meanwhile, Principal of Blind School, Nivedita Shukla said that there are fifty minor blind girl students studying there.
“In order to get recognition for the school, there was a need of over six kanal of land and we contacted the Advisor for this matter in 2019, and informed him that this blind school is the only school in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, the Advisor immediately directed the concerned officials including V-C JDA, who took initiate a process. The land was was measured but after August 5, 2019, the matter was delayed,” she said.
“When we approached the JDA they turned down our request and gave a rejection letter stating that the land has been proposed for greenery purposes,” she said.
“We were disappointed but had hope that the greenery developed by the JDA will also help the children to play there but shockingly the land was transferred to JMC, which now is using it for construction of Animal Hospital and cowshed,” she said further saying that government has forgotten to differentiate between animals and blind children.
