Cold grips Kashmir, Drass, Leh freeze

Srinagar, Nov 17: Kashmir valley gripped in intense cold conditions with further slip in temperature across while in Drass and Leh in Ladak Union Territory mercury plunged to minus 13.0 and minus 10.7 degrees respectively disrupting normal activities and adding people’s woe.
Drass and Leh in Ladakh Union Territory continue to experience freezing temperature with the minimum night temperature plunged to minus 13.0 in Drass the second coldest place in the world while at Leh it was recorded at minus 10.7 degree celsius at the airforce stations there.
Meanwhile, weather is most likely to remain dry till November 23, Meteorological Department said, and added there would be light snow over extreme north of Kashmir during the November 24 night.
The MeT office said the temperature would continue to remain on an average minimum below normal by minus 2 to minus 3 degree Celsius across Jammu and Kashmir except some pockets of Chenab valley.
Srinagar continued to experience coldest nights for the second consecutive day on Wednesday with temperature further dipped to minus 1.5 degree celsius against the minus 1.2 degree recorded previous day, while tourist resort of Pahalgam temperatures settled on minus 4.7 degree celsius second day today.
Reports from the Pahalgam said that small water bodies in the resorts have frozen up due to the impact of freezing temperatures.
Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway showed a further dip in the night temperature with a minimum recorded minus 2.2 degrees against the minus 1.8 degrees Celsius a day ago. Similarly at Kokernag it was minus 1.0 against the 0.2 degrees Celsius recorded the previous day, showing a further dip of a degree in the temperature.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir also reeling under cold weather where night temperature further plunged to minus 2.0 against the minus 1.2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. At Kupwara in frontier Kashmir district it was minus 2.0 degree celsius against the minus 2.3 degrees Celsius recorded the previous day showing slight improvement, the MeT office said.
