Second time in history J&K Legislative Assembly to miss Prez elections
7/18/2022 12:12:30 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 17: While MLAs along with MPs across the country will vote for Presidential elections on July 18, the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir will not be part of the exercise for the second time in the history of the election to the top constitutional post.
In 1992, the Legislative Assembly of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was dissolved and thus, could not be part of the 10th presidential polls that elected Shankar Dayal Sharma to the top constitutional post.
In 1992, Jammu and Kashmir had gone unrepresented in the Presidential polls as the election to the Lok Sabha too could not take place in the erstwhile State in 1991 due to terrorism. Since June 19, 2018, the J&K is under the President’s rule after BJP dumped its coalition partner PDP. The Legislative Assembly of the erstwhile J&K state was dissolved by the then Governor of J&K Satya Pal Malik on November 21, 2018.
The erstwhile J&K Assembly had 87 elected MLAs who would vote in the presidential election.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act provides for a Legislative Assembly for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, but the election is yet to be held due to various reasons
In the present case, the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir is yet to be constituted after the erstwhile State was bifurcated into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in 2019.
Although National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu has a clear edge over her rival in the Presidential elections, Opposition nominee Yashwant Sinha is likely to get more votes from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Keeping in view the numbers of Lok Sabha members from Jammu and Kashmir, Yashwant Sinha is likely to get 2100 votes while NDA Draupadi Murmu is going to get 1400.
As the Legislative Assembly of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir is already dissolved and there is not even a single Rajya Sabha member from the UT, only five elected Lok Sabha members are eligible to cast their votes in the 15th Presidential elections to be held on Monday.
Out of five Lok Sabha members from J&K, three belong to the National Conference and the remaining two are BJP members.
Five MPs who will cast votes for the Presidential election from J&K are Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and Jugal Kishore Sharma (both BJP), and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Mohammad Akbar Lone, and Hasnain Masoodi, (all National Conference).
The National Conference has already announced its support to opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha.
Each of the five Lok Sabha members from J&K has a vote value of 700 which means Sinha will get 2100 votes from Jammu and Kashmir while Murmu will secure 1400.
