Early Times Report
Jammu, June 10: The Cabinet Sub-Committee tasked with reviewing Jammu and Kashmir’s reservation policies has completed its report, Health and Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced on Tuesday. However, agitating students have urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to immediately convene a cabinet meeting for its discussion and implementation. Addressing concerns about alleged delays, Itoo reaffirmed that the committee had finalized its findings within the six-month deadline, set for June 10. "The report will be placed before the Cabinet when it meets," she stated in a post on X. Minutes after the announcement, the Open Merit Students Association of J&K demanded swift government action. “CM Omar Abdullah must urgently call a cabinet meeting and ensure the immediate implementation of the reservation report through an executive order. But before that, the full report must be made public so the people know what is being decided "Saying the report will be 'placed before the Cabinet when it meets' means nothing without a fixed date. There is no mention of a Cabinet meeting, no roadmap, and no clarity on when any action will be taken.” in their name,” the association posted on X. Expressing frustration, the students rejected what they called an “uncertain response” from the government. “Saying the report will be 'placed before the Cabinet when it meets' means nothing without a fixed date. There is no mention of a Cabinet meeting, no roadmap, and no clarity on when any action will be taken,” they argued. The students also reminded Abdullah of his December 23, 2024, assurance that the report would be made public upon completion. "The Open Merit community has waited long enough. We will not be silenced by more ambiguity or false hope," they emphasized, stressing that the issue is one of justice rather than politics. The Jammu and Kashmir government had formally constituted the three-member Cabinet Sub-Committee on December 10, 2024, following a decision by Abdullah’s Cabinet on November 22, 2024, to conduct a thorough review of reservation policies in government employment. |
