Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 25: A chilling wave of drug addiction is sweeping through Jammu & Kashmir, transforming a once-hidden crisis into a full-blown societal emergency that threatens to tear communities apart.
According to the alarming findings of the National Survey on Extent and Pattern of Substance Use in India (2022–23) by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, over 10% of J&K’s 1.35 million population is ensnared by substance abuse, with thousands of adolescents falling prey to this growing menace. Behind these stark statistics lie heart-wrenching tales of shattered families, squandered dreams, and lives lost to silent suffering.
A senior officer shared this data on his social media post and cautioned society against this menace.
In a bold response to this escalating crisis, the Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan has emerged as a beacon of hope,
signaling a seismic shift in policy. No longer treated as a mere crime, drug addiction is now being tackled as a critical public health and social development issue.

ts prevention programs, confidential counseling services, and robust rehabilitation efforts spearheaded by passionate youth volunteers and local institutions.
Yet, the battle is far from won. Experts warn that this crisis demands more than just initiatives—it requires unwavering policy coherence and a compassionate overhaul of societal attitudes. Schools must become fortresses of education, arming children with knowledge to resist drugs before they infiltrate. Communities must foster healing environments, dismantling stigma to support those in need. And for those emerging from the shadows of addiction, dignified livelihoods must be restored to rebuild shattered lives.
“Every life reclaimed from addiction is a victory for our society,” declared a senior official involved in the campaign. “But this is a collective war. Every informed citizen must rise as a warrior in this fight, or we risk losing an entire generation.”
The call to action is clear: Jammu & Kashmir stands at a crossroads. Will it unite to confront this devastating epidemic, or allow the scourge of addiction to tighten its grip? The time to act is now—before another family is broken, before another dream is lost.
