Rather unanimously elected as chairman EC of State Finance Ministers of India

NEW DELHI: J&K Finance Minister, Mr. A. R. Rather was today unanimously elected as the Chairman of the Empowered Committee (EC) of State Finance Ministers. The election was held in New Delhi in presence of Union Finance Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram, who is also patron of the Empowered Committee.The Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers is an important forum at the national level engaged in discussing various tax reforms proposed at national level from time to time and building consensus thereon. The committee meets regularly and all the decisions are taken on the basis of consensus. It has to its credit, besides other achievements, the implementation of the very important and landmark decisions; first the harmonization of sales tax structure through implementation of uniform floor rates of sales tax, which resulted in the end of unhealthy sales tax ‘rate war’ among the states; second, the introduction of state-level VAT. New Delhi: Coming out strongly against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Monday said he does not want him to become India's prime minister as he does not have secular credentials. The prominent economist also criticised Modi's model of governance saying he did not approve of it. "Yes, I don't want him," Sen told CNN-IBN in reply to a question on whether he wanted him as his prime minister. "As an Indian citizen I don't want Modi as my PM... Batch of 1,240 pilgrims leave for Amarnath from Jammu

Jammu: The 25th batch of 1,240 pilgrims on Monday left from Jammu base camp for their onward journey to the cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir. A convoy of 44 vehicles with 1,240 devotees left from Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu at around 4.50 a.m. towards Amarnath, police said in Jammu. The 25th batch of pilgrims, which included 950 male, 230 women and 15 children, apart from 45 sadhus, are on way to twin base camps of Pahalagam and Baltal in Kashmir Valley. With Monday’s batch a total of 45,741 pilgrims have left Jammu base camp for Amarnath so far.
