Over 750 schools in Jammu declared unsafe after safety audit | Flash Floods Aftermath | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 23: The education sector has emerged as the worst-hit in the recent spell of incessant rains and floods across Jammu province, with hundreds of school buildings rendered unsafe.
According to an official safety audit of more than 8,800 schools, over 5,500 institutions were issued safety certificates. Of these, nearly 5,200 were deemed structurally sound, while 758 were declared unsafe for students and staff. Ensuring continuity of education in these unsafe schools has now become one of the biggest challenges before the authorities.
Amid growing concerns, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Legislative Assembly, chaired by former minister and BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma, has directed the administration to conduct a fresh safety audit of all school buildings, particularly in flood-affected areas. The panel emphasized that immediate safety measures must be implemented to safeguard students’ lives.

JAMMU, Sept 23: A soldier died from a bullet fired from his service rifle outside a military hospital in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said.
Police have started inquest proceedings to ascertain whether the soldier died of accidental firing or committed suicide, they said.
The soldier-driver was waiting in a parked medicine supply vehicle in the main town when he was hit by the fatal gunshot.

Jammu, Sept 23: The officers of the wildlife department and Police on Tuesday captured a python weighing nearly 55 kilograms in Rajouri district, officials said.
Acting on information from locals, teams of police and the wildlife department rushed to Manpur village in Nowshera tehsil and launched an operation to capture a giant python in the forest area, Wildlife official Rajesh Kumar said.
The four-and-a-half-metre reptile was captured after an hours-long operation. It weighed 50-55 kilograms, Kumar added.
