Salman Khurshid's 'slip of tongue' could prove more painful for Cong than slip disc
4/29/2018 1:26:51 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28: A slip of the tongue could burn the topless towers the Congress. And despite detailed explanation and denial Salman Khurshid has suffered from a slip of the tongue which can be more painful than slip disc or bone fracture.
The non-controversial senior Congress leader and former Union Minister has invited criticism from the Congress itself which has distanced from his statement in which he had said that Congress has Muslim blood on its hands while referring to various communal riots which were allegedly engineered by the party while in power.
Salman Khurshid says that his reply was in the context of a question posed by a student while he was addressing students in Aligarh Muslim University. Later he had found that the student who asked the pointed question to him was said to be a former student who asked the former Union Minister that Muslim blood was on his (Salman's) clothes while referring to various riots including the Babri Masjid demolition riots.
Salman Khurshid told the student that "I have blood" and when he asked whether the Congress' hands are smeared with blood, the Congress leader said, "I am my party. I represent my party," which confirms that Salman Khurshid has obliquely blamed the Congress for having allegedly engineered various communal riots. He has added that his statement is not a declaration.
And still the Congress leaders have stated that whatever Salman Khurshid has said it is his personal opinion and not that of the party. And there is no personal or impersonal opinion on a senior Congress leader. For that matter any senior or junior leader belonging to BJP, or the leftists or the regional parties cannot have personal or public opinion. In fact a politician is know by the opinion his or her party preaches. There is no room for personal opinion.
And had not Salman Khurshid belonged to Muslim community the Congress would have either suspended him from the party or sacked him. Any such action would have led to crisis in the Congress which is banking on Muslim vote bank. Had this statement been made by a Hindu leader he would have been sacked within minutes of this scathing remark on the Congress role.
If any party is happy over Khurshid's gaffe it is the BJP which has brought out a list of communal riots which it believes was engineered by the Congress. The BJP takes full advantage of Khurshid's remarks with Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi raking up a number of riots, including the Bhiwandi, Bhagalpur and Malegaon riots besides the 1984 anti-Sikhs riots to convince the vote bank of the Congress that the party led by Rahul Gandhi is not free of sins of triggering communal violence.
Even if the Congress expels Salman Khurshid his statement is a death warrant for the party. And if Salman is thrown out of the Congress it may not wash blood of Muslims as recounted by Salman Khurshid. And his expulsion from the Congress may add to the problems for the Congress.
Whatever may be the explanation of Salman Khurshid his crisp remark against the Congress could pose a severe threat to the party in the ensuing Assembly poll in some states and the Lok Sabha election due in 2019. It is so that Muslims have treated the Congress as a secular party and the interests of the minority community could be safe if they vote for the Congress. This is the general impression whether this impression is right or wrong. But Salman Khurshid's remarks could prove costly for the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections next year.
