JAMMU/LEH, Sept 19: Five innovative rock check dams constructed across the Sindhu River and its tributaries in Ladakh have successfully withstood water flows exceeding 200 cusecs during peak summer, with only a minor breach reported in one structure at Upshi near Leh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said on Saturday.
In a post on X, the LG said that the innovative rock check dams, conceived as lasting solution for water and agricultural sustainability in Ladakh, have borne encouraging results. The check dams were constructed over four months beginning May 27, when the river's water flow was around 20 cusecs. The structures were built using locally sourced boulders from the riverbed and without cement, concrete or steel.The approach is intended to provide a low-cost, environment-friendly method of strengthening water availability and supporting agriculture in the high-altitude region.
"During peak summer, water flow was reported to be more than 200 cusecs. Now, with the start of winter, the water flow has drastically reduced to around 30 cusecs," LG said.
An inspection team of engineers was recently deputed to assess the stability and strength of the structures and examine any damage caused by high water pressure.
"Out of the five rock check dams, only the first one at Upshi near Leh, reported a minor breach," the LG said, adding that the damaged portion was being repaired by engineers.
The inspection also found deposits of fine-quality washed sand upstream of the structures, which, according to the LG, has further enhanced the stability of the check dams.
The LG described the pilot projects as an "invaluable learning experience", saying the experience would provide the technical know-how required to make future projects more robust.
