| ABVP's DUSU sweep leaves Rahul Gandhi cornered | |    | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 19: A big win for the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections has handed the BJP fresh ammunition against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, with party leaders framing the result as a direct rejection of his politics.
ABVP swept the president, secretary and joint secretary posts, while Congress's student wing, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), failed to win a single seat. The vice-president's post went instead to an independent candidate.
BJP spokesperson Siddharth Yadav told a press conference that Delhi University's mood reflected a rejection of Rahul Gandhi's brand of politics, framing the result as a verdict against what he called propaganda-driven campaigning — one, he said, Gandhi had failed.
Senior BJP leader Vinod Tawde called it a nationalist victory over what he termed "hollow noise," congratulating ABVP workers for a historic three-seat win. Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan struck a similar note, arguing the country's youth were choosing substance over noise and calling the result a fresh source of energy for a "developed India."
BJP MP Sambit Patra was the most pointed, calling it a rout of what he described as Gandhi's rhetoric, citing ABVP's 3-1 margin across the top posts and framing the outcome as proof of students' trust in Prime Minister Modi.
The wave of criticism has landed just as Gandhi is in Indore for his "Chhatron Ki Goonj" (Students' Echo) outreach programme — an initiative he launched at Delhi's Jantar Mantar amid protests over the NEET paper leak and broader student unrest.
Political observers tracking the DU polls note that this year's contest was shaped heavily by that Jantar Mantar agitation and Gandhi's student outreach campaign, alongside anger over hostel shortages following the Satya Niketan accident. NSUI had gone into the election with high expectations, but ABVP's margin proved decisive.
The BJP has repeatedly accused Gandhi of misleading students, a line Prime Minister Modi echoed recently during an interaction with students at Delhi University's Shri Ram College of Commerce, where he touted his government's record while taking aim at Congress — remarks widely seen as targeting Gandhi's outreach campaign.
Not every non-ABVP candidate was shut out. Independent contestant Deepanshu Shaukeen, who ran after being denied an NSUI ticket for the vice-president's post, won with 30,615 votes. The result marks a shift from last year, when ABVP took the president, secretary and joint secretary posts while NSUI held on to the vice-president's seat. | | |
