| Poor road engineering, incapability of Traffic police making traffic lights ineffective | | | Abodh Sharma
JAMMU, Sept 14: Eventhough recently installed traffic lights have helped in the regulation of messy city traffic to an extent, yet at several crossings of the city, poor road engineering and incapability of the traffic police have made these lights ineffective.
While absence of dividers and defined bus stops on the busy arteries can be attributed to poor road engineering, lack of will and ability on part of traffic officers and cops to discipline the mini buses to stop only at designated bus stops where ever they exist has been making lights irrelevant at many places.
Ever busy Jewel Chowk and even all important Bikram Chowk have been glaring examples of lack of imagination and will on part of the traffic police men manning these crossings. "Even when the signal turns green for the traffic emerging from University road, mini buses heading towards Gandhinagar continue to queue up blocking the main road," said Sudhir Mahajan, a resident of Trikuta Nagar locality. "There is a defined bus stop outside Amar Singh club less then hundred meters ahead, but mini bus drivers have not been disciplined to stop there. They queue up one after the other just at the crossing, blocking traffic coming from University lane," he added.
Same is the situation at the Jewel Chowk as well. Eventhough the traffic lights installed in this chocked crossing have not been made functional, mini buses coming from busy BC road towards Dogra Chowk invariably block the traffic emerging from Canal Road for the entire day. "It is a pity that traffic cops posted here continue to stay inside this shelter they have made on the divider and do not care to direct the mini bus drivers to stop only at the designated bus stop short of Dogra Chowk just 50 meters ahead," said Talvinder singh, a motorist.
Interestingly, both the bus stops made between Dogra Chowk and Jewel Chowk on either side of the road have been illegally encroached. While one has been turned into parking by the Jammu Municipal Corporation for its own vehicles, one on the other side has been encroached by vegetable and fruit vendors under the nose of Nawabad Police Station. |
