UPA is safe with support of 300 MPs, Azad re asserts | Meets party leaders, ministers | |
Early TImes report
Jammu, Sept 23: In the two day tour of the winter capital while Union Health Minister and senior Congress leader out and out defended Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on allowing FDI in retail trade and decisions on fuel hike, he blamed it all on TMC leader Mamta Banerjee saying it was pressure from her all though that delayed these 'much needed' steps. He reiterated today there was no threat to UPA government which he said still enjoys the support of 300 MPs.In his tightly packaged agenda , the former Chief Minister also interacted with senior leaders including ministers and discussed the present political scenario vis-à-vis coalition government and state of affairs within the Congress. Sources said apart from Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, some senior leaders of the party , those believed to be in his faction, including ministers and legislators met Azad and brief him on various political and matters related to governance in the coalition government . Sources said the former Chief Minister also took stock of certain fresh developments within the party in view of the speculations over names for ministerial berths to be accommodated in the cabinet reshuffle. The meeting with party leaders assumes significance in view of the fresh instructions from the party high command that both Azad and Prof Saif-u-Din Soz need to put up united face in the state and settle the pending political matters with consensus to send a positive message to the political corridors of the state. Various delegations also called on today at the Circuit House to discuss the matters related to their organizations and departments seeking his intervention and help in settling the issues. What however, came as a high point of Azad on political front today was his reassertion while speaking to media that there was no threat to the UPA government following withdrawal of support by TMC. "Our government has support of over 300 MPs in the Lok Sabha, including members from parties giving inside and outside support." For a simple majority, government needs the support of at least 273 MPs in a House of 545, the veteran Congress leader explaining arithmetic of figures. 'So there is no question of any threat to the government,' he remarked. Azad was talking to reporters here on the sidelines of a function to pay tributes to former Dogra ruler of the state Maharaj Hari Singh on its 117th birth anniversary at Dogra Chowk area of the city. |
