| Security bandobast on Srinagar-Jammu highway to be upgraded | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 7 : With stage being set for the Durbar move from Srinagar to Jammu militants too have, reports indicated, become active for resorting to acts of subversive violence. Official sources said that the security forces have been asked to upgrade surveillance mechanism on the 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu highway to foil any attempt by the militants at carrying out IED or grenade blasts during the heavy movement of civilian and Army convoys on the highway. A senior police officer, wishing to remain unidentified, said that instructions to the Army, the CRPF and the police to intensify round the clock patrolling on the Srinagar-Jammu highway have been given following Saturday's incident in which the security forces detected and defused an IED which had been planted on the highway near Qazigund. He said that the Army and the police have been asked to coordinate their efforts for increasing the number of Road Opening parties(ROPs) so that these parties could carry out search operations for explosives which may have been planted on the highway. He said that these ROPs have been asked to ensure that no stretch of the highway was left uncovered. The security forces besides the intelligence agencies have been asked to review the security measures that were needed to be taken in hand for ensuring foolproof cover against any acts of sabotage on the highway. Reports said that ssince militants had become desperate over the failure to kick up acts of violence they were in search of an opportunity for making it big by attacking Army and civilian convoys. Police said that the deployment of security personnel on the highway for keeping a watch against sub versives and militants was being increased. Similarly the ROPs were being entrusted to the Army and the CRPF and the police would be available for providing any assistance, including the logistic support, to the security forces for ensuring an incident movement of he Army and the civilian convoys on the highway. |
