| Cong convenes meeting on BDC polls, allies stay away | | Trying to build consensus within party over 'strategy': Soz | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Oct 7: As the countdown for elections to Block Development Councils has begun with issuance of notification, Congress has started its exercise in line of preparations well within time. A meeting of Ministers and legislators of the party was held in Srinagar today by J&K PCC president Saifuddin Soz for the purpose of building consensus within the party over the 'strategy' to be adopted for these elections. " We are trying to build consensus within the party first as to what should be the strategy for these crucial polls…….all the MLAs and MLCs were present besides the ministers of the party who discussed the issue threadbare …..", PCC chief said while speaking to ET. However, no decision has been taken as yet, he said adding in the same breath," it is very serious and crucial issue and shall receive serious attention at all levels from the party". Prof So said a series of meetings would be convened and views of all concerned would be taken seriously before arriving at some decision . Tomorrow also a meeting has been called in which district presidents of the party and senior functionaries have been invited. " We have also called a group of people whose role in the Panchayat elections in terms working for party interests has been vital. ……their contribution has been important which is why their presence in the meeting is important", he explained. However, a significant development seen in today's meeting remained that despite all other allies including the minister Ghulam Hassan Mir , PDF president Hakim Mohammand Yasin and CPM legislator MY Tarigami having been properly invited to the meeting, none of the three allies attended the meeting. Sources attribute their absence to the fact the three saw this purely as Congress' own meeting which is why they called it Legislature party meeting. Sources also said that the three have felt that it should have been convened as the meeting of Congress and its allies which was not there. However, the PCC chief while admitting that they did not attend the meeting said there were some personal engagements with them on account of which they could not come. " All the three are with us..(Congress)…there should be no doubt about it…", he maintained. It is worthwhile to mention that even as Congress has been a votary of conducting these elections too on non party basis , yet the meeting held today by the party assumes significance. The PCC chief confirmed nothing final has been decided by the government or the ruling parties as yet and it would take some time to arrive at consensus at that aspect of the polls.
