| Pilgrim facilities on Amarnath yatra track to be upgraded | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 17: Following recommendations of a supreme court appointed committee the state Government plans to initiate additional measures for improving facilities for Amarnath pilgrims. Official sources said that the Committee had recommended that the mountain track between Pahalgam and the holy cave be renovated and widened for facilitating easy passage for the pilgrims. Sources said that while the state Government has accepted all the main recommendations of the committee which includes up gradation in health facilities, strengthening powr and water supply besides the infrastructure for the benefit of pilgrims, the state authorities have reservations on the suggestion for building a pacca road from Pahalgam to the holy cave. A senior state Government officer said that besides threat to the ecology in the mountain belt a metalled road cannot survive heavy snow, sleet, rain and subzero temperature. Explaining it he said that since the metalled road is likely to cave in under heavy snow it would mean that the st at Government has to rebuild it every year. The officer added that since the track get cleared of snow in June it will not be possible for any Government agency to rebuild the metalled road within three weeks. As part of the plan to upgrade the f acilities the centre is planning to explore the possibility of starting the Yatra, earlier than the schedule,by, making arrangements for mechanized removal of snow along the route and starting of a rope-way to the Amarnath cave. However, the st ate Government has decided to widen the track between Pahalgam and the holy cave. The committee has said that there were a number of spots and stretches where the route was quite narrow thereby endangering lives of pilgrims. The st ate authorities have also decided to keep the track quite clean and smooth. In addition to this latest gadgets were being pressed into service during the yatra period for strengthening the supply of electricity and drinking water to the pilgrims. Some of the gadgets would be made available at all medical camps. The number of medical camps was being increased by 20 per cent so that in case of any problem pilgrims received medical aid immediately. More temporary structures in the shape of huts and tented colonies were to be set up between Pahalgam and th cave and between Baltal and the cave where pilgrims could ward off any threat from adverse weather conditions. |
