Has Omar Abdullah thrown up hands in tackling corruption?

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 17: What has been missed by most while reading the statement made in New Delhi by State Chief Minister is that he has finally washed his hands off tackling corruption and accepted the doctrine of let the looters rob if you want to remain in power.
Omar Abdullah said in New Delhi that it is impossible to tackle corruption during coalition Governments and if the people of the State are really serious in their desire to curb corruption they must next time give a clear mandate to a single political party. The statement in itself is the admission by the Chief Minister that he has decided to finally throw up his hands when it comes to tackling the dragon of corruption.
What are the compulsions of Omar Abdullah in sticking to a coalition that by his own admission is not able to address the menace and scourge of corruption in the State? It must be said to the credit of the Chief Minister that most people in and outside the State still believe Omar Abdullah is personally above board, but he is bogged down in a set-up which he is unable to come to grips with.
The question is why should the 42-year old Chief Minister who has a long road ahead pursuing his political career suddenly announce that while heading the coalition Government in the State he is unable to do anything to curb corruption? What use is personal integrity if you allow yourself to be surrounded by a bunch of thieves? On the face of it, there seems to be no overbearing compulsion that should have forced the Chief Minister to make such a defeatist statement.
Politics is definitely all about making adjustments, but definitely not the ones where you compromise your own integrity to remain in power. The statement made by the Chief Minister in fact contains in itself a very important message and advice for the Chief Minister himself. If Omar Abdullah wants the people of the State to give him a clear mandate so that he can tackle the scourge of corruption then he would have to make a sacrifice to earn the trust of the very people from whom he has sought a powerful single party mandate.
How can somebody who admits helplessness today be expected to take the dragon of corruption head-on tomorrow? The first thing that the Chief Minister must do to prove that he is genuinely concerned about the menace of corruption is to identify those in the coalition Government who are coming in the way of his resolve to weed out the scourge. He will have to state clearly why he cannot act against corruption in the present coalition. Making a clean breast of himself would raise Omar Abdullah in the eyes of the people. Only after that can the desire of seeking a clear mandate for his party be taken seriously by the people.
