| MGNREGA generates 10 crore job days, creates 1.73 lakh community works | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Jan11: The flagship programme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has had great impact on generation of jobs in rural areas and creation of necessary community infrastructure in villages. The programme being implemented by the Rural Development Department has had its significant mark on upliftment of rural population by way of ensuring 100 days job for each rural family. The department has issued over 10.50 lakhs job cards to the rural labour families during the last four year creating about 10 crore mandays of work for them by November 2012 end. An amount of Rs. 1791 crore has been incurred under MGNREGA during this period in the rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir. This has given considerable fillip to the economic welfare of poor rural families and helped to create public infrastructure in various important sectors. Works like water conservation, water harvesting, drought-proofing, afforestation, small and micro irrigation, development of ponds, construction of bunds, land development works, renovation of water bodies, de-silting of tanks, flood control protection works, drainage, repairs of channels, rural connectivity, construction of Bharat Nirman Resource Centres, construction of Gram Panchayat Bhawans, agriculture related works, livestock and poultry development works, fisheries related and cultivation of vegetable related schemes, rural drinking water, rural sanitation schemes, etc are covered under MGNREGA. During the last four years more than 1.73 lakh such works have been completed in the rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir under MGNREGA, which have helped to upgrade basic facilities in these areas and generate various kinds of economic activities. These works have also helped in maintenance and improvement of environmental conditions in villages and beautification of countryside. Panchayat Institutions have been devolved the powers of implementing MGNREGA. Panchayats identify and prioritize the works and participate in the implementation process. It has not only strengthened the Panchayat Institutions but made implementation more transparent. |
