BlackBerry services suffer outage in India
5/6/2013 1:48:22 AM
NEW DELHI: BlackBerry customers across India and some parts of the world were not able to send emails or messages via BlackBerry Messenger as the Canadian company's services were disrupted for a few hours on Friday.
Disgruntled BlackBerry customers poured their outrage on Twitter while demanding answers from the handset maker. "Blackberry please, please tell me we're not experiencing another Blackberry outage. Is it just me?" @priceecsg was quoted by Outrage Tracker on the social networking site. "BlackBerry outage, started 3 hours ago. No word from BlackBerry," @NexusFandom said while another customer informed, "There is a BIS outage in Toronto so my BlackBerry is not working right now."
Other Twitter users added that BlackBerry's enterprise services in some areas were non-functional as well.
BlackBerry said that the services were down only for some time and the company was working on restoring connectivity. "Some of our customers may be experiencing issues with BlackBerry services. All relevant support teams are working to resolve the issue. We apologise to any customers who may be affected," the company said when the issue was highlighted by customers on Twitter.
The temporary snag comes at a time when BlackBerry is trying hard to gain back market share with new devices - Z10 and Q10 - packed with features and the refurbished BlackBerry enterprise services. Smartphone maker Apple has pipped BlackBerry in developed markets where it used to enjoy a large fan following till some years ago. The handset maker has since been focusing on developing markets like India with more affordable handsets for a large youth population.
BlackBerry suffered a three-day global service outage in October 2011 that frustrated millions of customers worldwide that forced the company to make substantial improvements in quality of services.
In an updated statement on Friday, Varghese Thomas, director - corporate communications - India & Greater China Region said, "As an update, we can confirm that our technical teams have addressed the issue and BlackBerry services are returning to normal levels. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience. We take all service issues - no matter how small - very seriously and through constant monitoring and investigation we aim to ensure our network meets customer expectations."
