| Brazil's Rousseff to meet Chief Justice and other Leaders to Discuss Referendum | | | SAO PAULO: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is scheduled to meet later Tuesday with Brazilian Supreme Court Chief Justice Joaquim Barbosa and Senate President Renan Calheiros to discuss a national referendum on overhauling a political system often criticized as unaccountable and corrupt.
Ms. Rousseff will also meet with Brazil Bar Associaton President Marcus Coelho on Tuesday.
"We need a public debate on a plebiscite for a constituent assembly on political reform," Ms. Rousseff said Monday in a televised speech during a cabinet meeting. "Political reform has been on the nation's agenda for many years."
Opposition party leaders criticized the proposal, saying Ms. Rousseff is shirking responsibility and trying to distract protestors.
Ms. Rousseff will also meet Tuesday with representatives of some of the groups organizing the ongoing protests in some of the country's largest cities in an attempt to open a dialogue. |
