| Govt mocks rainfall victims by announcing pea-nuts for their rehabilitation: Harsh | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 24: National Panthers Party (NPP) Chairman and MLA Harsh Dev Singh has strongly flayed the state government for trivializing the issue of recent rainfall damages and destruction in the state and announcing a paltry amount for restoration works. He said the yesterday's meeting which was attended by various Ministers and bureaucrats has announced an insignificant amount of Rs. 9.95 crore only for damages to residential houses, private property, standing corps, land erosion and loss of human lives. He said the government had underrated and belittled the catastrophe which had caused colossal loss of property, agricultural lands and human lives. He said that more than 10,000 houses had collapsed in the incessant rains and floods besides washing away of thousands of hectares of agriculture fields in additional to losses caused to standing crops. He said several thousands of people had been rendered houseless and shelterless while the torrential rains and floods had claimed hundreds of lives besides injuries to several hundreds. He said that rehabilitation and restoration of damaged houses and private property due to act of nature was the moral responsibility of the govt. which it was trying to evade and downplay. He said provision of pea-nuts for restoration of damaged private property was most ridiculous and a humiliation to the victims of such a severe natural disaster. Harsh Dev Singh further castigated the state government for its half hearted and biased survey of the rain hit areas and resultant faulty and flawed statistics collected in pursuance thereof. He said that while the number of collapsed houses far exceeded 10,000 mark in the state the government had merely shown the number at 5600 in its records. He said there were vast majority of villages/areas in District Udhampur, District Kathua, District Samba erstwhile District Doda, Reasi etc which were not even visited by the field functionaries of revenue department thus depriving several bonafide farmers of their legitimate claims of compensation and relief. Harsh Dev Singh further sought additional funds for restoration of damaged public infrastructure in the state. He said that announcement of barely Rs. 77.50 crores for the purpose would not suffice as heavy damages were caused to roads, Govt. Buildings, Bridges, Power infrastructure, telecommunication system besides drinking water schemes. |
