During the last two years, ninety six people in the district have committed or attempted to commit suicide according to the records of district hospital. During the year 2011-12 a total of 44 people made an attempt on their lives while 52 attempted suicide during 2012-13. Surprisingly, majority of them were youth, both male and female. In 2011-12 twenty four and during 2012-13 thirty nine such people were referred for specialized treatment outside Kathua district. Psychologist Surabhi Nandan, told Early Times that reason for committing suicide mostly is failure to adjust to the fast paced life along with depression caused by socio economic factors and is most common in the age group of 14 to 30 years. The family and peer pressure of good showing in academic and employment opportunities and failure thereafter compels the immature youth to commit suicide. Overall the failure to adjust in the present day complicated society is the reason behind suicidal tendency. JP Singh, the superintendent of district hospital Kathua told that there is both rise and fall in the incidents of suicide. Lack of ventilator in district hospital is the reason of referral cases. In serious cases no option is left except to refer the case to the next convenient quarter. The most cases are of those who cannot manage stress. For such mentally weak persons, counseling is the only way to deter the incidents, he added. |
