| Kashmir continues to reel under cold conditions | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 11: Kashmir continued to reel under cold conditions as the minimum temperature across the Valley stayed below the freezing point with no respite from the dry weather.
The Valley has been going through dry weather over the past more than a month, although the winter set in early this season with the high altitude areas, including Gulmarg recording the first snowfall at the fag end of October.
With no rains or snowfall since then, the nights have been cold and the minimum temperatures keep hovering around the freezing point. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius as compared to the previous night's minus 2.1 degrees Celsius, a MeT Department official said.
The night temperature in the tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's low of 4.0 degrees Celsius. The mercury in the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg settled at a low of minus 3.5 degrees Celsius, almost same as the previous night's minus 3.4 degrees Celsius.
Qazigiund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.3 degrees Celsius as compared the previous night's minus 2.4 degrees Celsius. The official said Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a minimum of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius as against minus 2.0 degrees Celsius the previous night, while Kokernag in south recorded a low of minus 0.3 degree Celsius.
Leh continues to remain the coldest place in the state as the frontier town of Ladakh region registered a drop of almost two degrees in the minimum temperature which settled at minus 11.4 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's minus 9.5 degrees Celsius. The nearby Kargil town recorded a drop of over one degree in the minimum temperature as the mercury settled at a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius as against the previous night's minus 3.2 degrees Celsius. The MeT Department has said the weather will continue to remain dry for the next 24 hours. |
