| While NC pulling up its socks, BJP hit by inertia | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 10: Among all the mainstream political parties the National Conference, which had lost the three Lok Sabha seats it had contested in the Kashmir valley, is the only party that has initiated measures for infusing life in the organization by revamping its cadre and by strengthening its vote bank. Dr Farooq Abdullah has been in the forefront of those engaged in revamping the party and as President of the party senior Abdullah has been holding party meetings and interacting with a cross section of party workers and supporters. To begin with he has succeeded in his first task of appointing Ali Mohd Sagar as General Secretary of the National Conference. Sagar has the capability of bringing about reconciliation among warring party leaders and activists. In fact Sagar has been asked to promote unity among all ranks in the organization so that the National Conference emerges as a one team organization during contesting the ensuing Assembly election. Party sources said that Dr Farooq has taken a serious note of the drubbing of the party candidates, including himself, received during the recent Lok Sabha poll. He has fears that if the tussle between the loyalists and the dissidents in the NC was not resolved the party may not fare well during the ensuing Assembly poll and that could give a chance to its main political foes, the PDP, to regain power. Against Dr Farooq's plan of reviving the 76-year old party in Jammu and Kashmir the state unit of the Congress continues to be plagued by dissensions and by lack of discipline. Its top leaders are awaiting some firm measures from the party high command which may resolve the problem of factional feuds. However, the state unit of the BJP is unmoved and its leaders continue to bask in the glory of its victory over three Lok Sabha seats in the regions of Jammu and Ladakh. The recent visit of the party MP and Minister of state in the council of ministers headed by Narendra Modi, Dr Jitendra Singh to Udhampur has brought out the level of friction and conflict between the two factions of the party. The BJP unit seems to have been gripped by an illusion that it may perform well in the ensuing Assembly election but the party leaders should know it well that the party's win from three seats in Jammu and Ladakh regions was the result of the Modi wave and the same euphoria may not help the party during the Assembly poll. The state unit of the BSP too is sailing in the same boat. But two mainstream political parties, the PDP and the Panthers Party, seem to have been engaged in strengthening their vote banks. While the PDP is confident on doing well in the Kashmir valley, which has 46 Assembly segments, it has started focusing its attention on inflating its vote bank in the Jammu region. Similarly, the Panthers Party too is keen to strengthen its vote bank. |
