| Jaitley briefed on overall J&K security scenario | | Takes serious note of ceasefire violations | | Omar pleads financial assistance Jehangir Rashid/ Javaid Naikoo SRINAGAR, June 14: Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley arrived here today on his maiden visit to Jammu and Kashmir. The Defence Minister discussed security scenario in the state during his meetings with Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and Governor Narendra Nath Vohra. Officials said that during his two day visit, Jaitley would visit some of the forward posts and in addition would chair the special security review meeting. He got a briefing about the overall security scenario in the state during a meeting at the headquarters of 15 Corps immediately after arriving here. He is accompanied by Chief of Army Staff, Lt General Bikram Singh. "The security officials gave a resume of the security set up to the Defence Minister as soon as he arrived in Srinagar. The security forces officials told him that the situation is very much under control on the Line of Control and there is no need to worry on this front. The Defence Minister patted the officials for their excellent work and said that vigil should be carried on," said officials. The Defence Minister said that since firing from across the border has been going on over the past few days it is important that the guard is not lowered near the Line of Control. He received an assurance from the security officials that vigil would be maintained on the Line of Control so that befitting reply is given to the enemy. The Defence Minister was told that a foolproof mechanism is in place on the Line of Control in order to ensure that there is no infiltration from across the border. He was told that there have been few infiltration incidents this year and these have been thwarted by the alert forces. Taking serious note of the ongoing ceasefire violations along the Line of Control by Pakistan, Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley today said the Indian Army is fully equipped and strong enough to deal with ceasefire violations by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. "I have come here to review the overall security situation. I shall be interacting with officials on this during my stay here," Defence Minister, Arun Jaitley said replying questions on the repeated ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the Line of Control (LoC) particularly in Poonch District of Jammu division, he said that "Our Army is strong enough and well-equipped to deal with such violations going on in the region." The Defence Minister called on the Chief Minister later in the day and discussed issues of security importance with Omar. Along with the security matters the Chief Minister raised some of the financial matters with respect to the overall developmental plan of the state. An official spokesman said that Omar asked the Defence Minister who is also the Finance Minister to provide financial help to the state so that there are no problems on the financial front. Aspects regarding skill development initiatives taken by the state Government for the youth also came up for discussion between the Defence Minister and Chief Minister. "During the meeting which lasted for over one hour, the two leaders also discussed the current situation on Line of Control and borders. The matters relating to the preparedness of the state Government to conduct Amarnath Yatra smoothly also came up for discussion during the meeting," said the official spokesman. The spokesman said that the Defence Minister also held a meeting with the Governor and during the discussion various issues relating to the rapid growth and development of the state came up. Security set up for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra came up for discussion during the meeting. "Chief of Army Staff, General Bikram Singh, General Officer Commanding in Chief, Northern Command, Lt Gen. D.S Hooda and GOC 15 Corps Lt Gen Gurmit Singh also joined the discussions later on. Important matters concerning external and internal security management were discussed during the meeting," said the official spokesman. Srinagar based spokesman of 15 Corps, Lt Col N N Joshi in a press release said that on arrival, the Defence Minister was received by Lt Gen D. S Hooda and Lt Gen Gurmit Singh. The spokesman said that Defence Minister visited headquarters of Chinar Corps wherein he was given a comprehensive briefing on the overall security situation in the Valley. "Security measures including the counter infiltration grid along the Line of Control and counter militancy grid in the hinterland came up during the security briefing to the Defence Minister. On June 15, the Defence Minister is scheduled to visit the forward areas along the Line of Control where he will be interacting with commanders and troops. He is also scheduled to attend special security review meeting here," said the Defence spokesman. |
