| Jammu region produces more milk than Kashmir | | Baramulla tops list, Srinagar last in district wise production | | Sandeep Bhat
Jammu, July 31: As per data available with early times, Jammu region produces around 786.05 mts of milk, while Kashmir province around 769.37 mts according to ES JK in the year 2011-12.While the Ladakh region produced around 59.15 mts in year 2011-12 and remained at last position. This trend still continues and Jammu region is producing more milk even today as compared to Kashmir region. But as per district wise production of milk, Baramulla district leads the way and produces around 121.54 mts of milk which averages around 7.53% of production followed by Jammu district which produced around 117.30 mts of milk averages around 7.27% and Budgam is at third place which produced around 111.77 mts of milk averages around 6.92 % of total production in the year 2011-12 as per data available and the trend still goes on. There is not much difference in milk production, and Leh district produces 25 .02 mts averages 1.55% and Kargil district around 34.13mts averages 2.11 % again for the year 2011-12. Average milk yield per day per animal during 2011-12 was 5.643 kgs for cross cows, 2.594 kgs for local cows and 4.895 kgs for buffaloes and 0.605 kg for goats in Jammu and Kashmir. During the year 2011-12, the total estimated milk production for the state was 1614.57 thousand mts constituting of 982.05 thousand mts of cross cow milk which averages 60.83%,237.19 thousand mts of local cow milk averages 14.69%,followed by 293.70 thousand mts averages 18.19% of Buffalo milk and lastly but not the least goat milk which was around 101.62 thousand mts. Average per capita availability of milk in our state was 370.10 GM per day which was higher than the national average of 356 GM per person per day in the year 2010-11.It is strange that the summer capital Srinagar produced the lowest production of milk around 16.43 mts averages 1.02% of production for the year 2011-12. |
