| New colleges have dismal infrastructure, inadequate staff | | | Muhammad Mukaram
Pampore, Aug 19 : Despite the tall claims of Omar Abdullah-led government to provide the best education infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, most of the newly established colleges have dismal infrastructure and extremely inadequate teaching staff. Degree College Pampore comprises of only four classrooms and 349 students, putting a question mark on the functioning of Higher Education Department. The college is functioning in the building of Government Boys Higher Secondary School. Lack of accommodation and shortage of manpower in college is causing huge inconvenience to students and staff members. The college has 10 different streams from first year to final year. One room is meant for staff and a small room for library, accounts section and admission section. The college faculty comprises of just four permanent lecturers including Principal, while ten work on contractual basis and seven are non-teaching staff. The students claim that no full- fledged library has been established in the college. " Though there are few books in a small room, there is no well established library where the students could go through newspapers and magazines and keep themselves updated about the latest happenings," said a student of B.A 2nd year. However, the data on website of Department of Higher education J&K says the state at present has 72 colleges out of which only 44 have their own buildings. Twenty seven functioning from borrowed accommodations and one in hired building. The space in most colleges is insufficient to run all the courses they offer. The newly established colleges are not even in a position to offer degrees in science subjects as the infrastructure available in these colleges is challenging the government's sincerity. "Despite having inadequate infrastructure, we are faced with immense hardships as there is no sitting place and we are feeling shy and disturbed while going to bathroom as there is only one lavatory established which is being used by students as well as all staff members. This college is lacking all basic facilities as there is no water, no lighting system, and no dispensary and fans. Sometimes we feel like studying in a primary school," said a student of Ist year. The construction on the college building started three years back but the work has been going on snail's pace. A college professor said that it was a matter of appreciation that despite the inadequate infrastructure, the college "gives 100 pc result every year. We give personal attention to every student". |
