Cleric's death in road mishap sparks protest, bandh observed in Naninara

Bandipora, Aug 28: The tragic death of a young cleric (Imam) in a road accident sparked protest in Naninara village of Sumbal area in Bandipora district of north Kashmir while people observed complete shut-down and also blocked Srinagar-Bandipora highway for traffic movement which halt for hours today.
According to sources that hundreds of men, women and children came on roads and staged protest against the authorities and demanding immediate arrest of the erring tipper driver (allegedly driving in intoxicated condition) who had fled from the spot after the accident.
Early times have learnt from reliable sources that "A 35 year old cleric Fayaz Ahmed Mir resident of Gutlibagh of Ganderbal district was crushed to death after he was hit by a speedy tipper (JK02R-2286) at Naninara Sumbal.
According to local resident of Naninara, Mushtaq Ahmad Mir that the cleric was on way to attend a marriage ceremony in the same village, when he was just to cross the road and suddenly a speedy tipper appeared on scene and crushed the cleric critically.
"Soon after the accident the driver of the tipper fled from the spot though some locals tried to chase him but he escaped by jumping in another tipper which was also on the same way, Mir said.
Some local shifted the critically injured cleric to Sub-District Hospital Sumbal where doctors declared him brought dead. Agitated people allege that police did not make any effort to nab the erring driver.
Meanwhile police sources said that tipper driver has been identified as Irfan Ahmed s/o Bashir Ahmed of Sadarkot Bala Sumbal.
Amid anti-police slogans the protesters ransacked the hospital property to register their resentment. People also observed complete shut-down and blocked traffic on Srinagar-Bandipora road to mourn the death of cleric and to register their anger over the 'hit and run' case.
Eyewitness said that the protestors were dispersed after the intervention of Deputy commissioner Bandipora Shah Faisal who rushed to spot and assured the protestors that the driver would be arrested and road near Nani-nara will be widen in coming days.
Meanwhile Deputy Commissioner (DC) Bandipora also sanctioned a compensation of Rs 30,000 in favor of the deceased said eyewitness.
