| As flood water ebbs, politicking climaxes | | | KUNAL SHRIVATSA
JAMMU, Sept 18 : As the flood waters in twin capital cities of Kashmir and Jammu as well as other locations of the state have considerably receded over the last few days, the opposition parties have indulged in blame game as they are not wasting any opportunity in hitting out at the present regime for its alleged mishandling of relief and rescue operations in flood ravaged areas. The charges of complete breakdown of the state administration during the hour of crisis are flying thick and fast as the opposition parties particularly Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Jammu Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) have up the ante against Omar Abdullah led National Conference-Congress coalition government. Firing a salvo at the ruling regime, the BJP termed State government’s scale of relief as not only insufficient but also a crude joke with those who are badly affected by one of the worst natural disasters state witnessed in over a century. The scathing attack on the state government came in a meeting of the BJP MLAs convened here today at party headquarters to discuss post-flood scenario in J&K. The BJP legislators Ashok Khajuria, Sham Choudhary, Baldev Raj Sharma, Jagdish Raj Sapolia, Durga Dass, Sukhnandan Kumar, Bharat Bhushan and Prof Gharu Ram described the recommendations by State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) as a drop in the ocean and cruel joke with the affected families. The MLAs, with one voice condemned and disapproved the relief quantum recommended by it for the various types of dwellings and cattle as grossly inadequate. They said that the amount of relief is meager for the victims who have lost everything and are without any clue as to where from their next meal is going to come. The attitude and the approach of the concerned authorities is insensitive and callous. While the main opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) was also blunt in criticizing the government for its alleged inconsiderateness for the flood affected people. PDP said that State Government was adopting inhuman approach in providing relief to the residents of twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri. During his visit to border district Poonch, Member Legislative Council (MLC) and General Secretary of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Yash Pal Sharma regretted that relief dispatched by the State Government and other social organizations is yet to reach deserving people. He alleged that State Government was insensitive in providing relief to the residents of Poonch and Rajouri districts. Contesting claims of the state government that relief has been reached to all the flood affected areas, Sharma pointed out that most of the residents of flood affected areas of Poonch and Rajouri were without any relief. |
