| Govt fails to provide relief | | Rehabilitation of flood victims a distant dream' | | Shakeel A Khan
SRINAGAR, Sept 29: Rehabilitation of the flood sufferers is a distant dream; the coalition government lead by Omar Abdullah isn't able to distribute the free ration. The people of the Valley are up against the government as there is a state of confusion all over the Valley regarding the distribution of the free ration. The free ration has been distributed at the rate of fifty kgs at some places, at some places at the rate of twenty five kgs and, most of the places haven't received the supply. There are many areas still inundated in Srinagar and the claims of the government that it has sent the relief ration to all corners of the valley aren't true in nature. In fact most of the flood victims, at least from Srinagar are living in pathetic conditions, some in relief camps set up by the volunteers and some in make shift shelters on the flood channel banks. "The government, which is visible on the paper only, claims that the entire population of the valley has been covered under the free ration supplies which absolutely incorrect to the best of my knowledge. When most of the Srinagarities are away from their homes and for whom the government has no concerns, how is it possible that the government has reached to all sufferers," said Sameena from Qamarwari while talking to Early Times. She said that all the family members at her home, who have temporarily settled at her relative's home, come early in the morning to send a message that they are alive. As per Sameena, the interior walls of their house have collapsed totally and none from her family dares to enter the house since there are apprehensions that the house may collapse anytime. She asks where she should keep the free ration which the government claims to have supplied to them, since her house, like most of the houses in Srinagar have turned into the killer spots. She laments that the government talks of the free ration only as if they were the beggars, needing food desperately. It is not the only problem; there are many other problems which the distribution of free ration has posed by the distribution of free ration. It has put the lives of the employees of the consumer affairs and public distribution department to great risk as they have to face the public wrath during the distribution process. An employee of the consumer affairs and public distribution department said on the condition of the anonymity they face tremendous hardships while distributing the ration. The weakness of the government can be gauged from the fact we have to take the Mohalla committees along for the smooth functioning of the department, said the terrified employee. |
