PM's Srinagar Diwali visit is welcome but why not include Jammu in it? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to spend the Diwali with flood affected people in J&K is a rare and welcome gesture. On the principle of the decision there should be no questions. This will be Modi's fourth visit to Jammu and Kashmir since he became the Prime Minister five months ago. The fact that the Prime Minister has visited J&K more times than any other place during these five months proves his desire to help the people of the State and to ensure that the rest of the country identifies with the people of the State. It has been welcomed by everybody except for the Kashmiri separatist who have opposed the visit proving that they are hardly bothered about any real relief and rehabilitation of the people whose lives have been devastated by the recent floods. Modi is expected to announce a massive relief package for the flood victims of Jammu and Kashmir during his one-day visit to the Valley. It can always be said the Prime Minister should have also chosen to visit the Jammu region during his visit to the State on the occasion of Diwali festival. There is no doubt that there has been huge damage to properties both private and public and also to commercial establishments in the Valley. At the same time more human lives were lost in the Jammu region by the recent floods in comparison to the loss of human lives in the Valley. There has been loss of properties and infrastructure in the Jammu region. Since this damage has occurred in the far flung and inaccessible areas in Poonch, Reasi, Rajouri and other districts there was less public and Government focus on this loss. Presuming that since the loss has taken place in inaccessible areas those are away from the public and media focus does not mean the miseries and tragedies of the flood victims in the Jammu region can be overlooked. The central Government must ensure that such a feeling does not become widespread. It must also ensure that the relief and rehabilitation of one region does not take place at the cost of the other region. The State of Jammu and Kashmir comprises three important regions and no region, however, big or small is insignificant enough for the central Government to ignore it. The Prime Minister visiting Srinagar is welcome, but what needs to be explained is why is he not coming to Jammu? The BJP is preparing hard to fight the State assembly elections those are now going to be held in December this year. The Election Commission of India is likely to make this announcement within the next few days. The Prime Minister's visit to J&K has delayed the announcement by a day or so. If the BJP believes one region is already in its pocket and, therefore, what is important is focus should entirely be made on the other region to establish its political base, the party could not have made a bigger mistake. Nothing can ever be taken for granted and more so during the time of elections. How well does the decision of the Prime Minister not to visit Jammu on Diwali go down with the BJP supporters and the common people in the Jammu region would now have to be watched. |
