Srinagar, October 29: Traders Association Lal Chowk (TALC) on Wednesday, held day long 'token hunger strike' as a mark of protest against the government's alleged tardy approach in recompensing the deluge hit business community of commercial nerve centre. Under make shift tent erected in the midst of Lal Chowk, the traders alleged that the government has miserably failed to mitigate the woes of the common people as well as business community of Kashmir.
All the shops, business establishments in and around Lal Chowk remained shut to protest the government's step motherly treatment meted out to the business sector by delaying rehabilitation process.
The protesters alleged that the government despite repeated assurance of providing with the adequate compensation to the victims miserably failed to adopt its word on ground.
"When we tried to meet Prime Minister we were not let to meet him, as neither the center nor the state had any rehabilitation package for us," alleged President TALC Din Mohammad Mattoo , adding, traders at Lal Chowk suffered losses to the tune of over 30, 000 crore."There are more than 80 percent of the shopkeepers who have been dashed to the ground as they had not been covered with any insurance policy. They have nothing left to start their businesses. Now they believe that if government provides them the rehabilitation package, it would give them a chance to restart their business," Mattoo said.
He said if the central government is not capable enough to compensate the losses of the traders then it should let the international aid flow in Kashmir as happened in other part of Kashmir when natural calamities struck there.
He also threatened to intensify the agitation if their long pending demand is not met at an earliest.
"Traders have not assembled here with begging bowls seeking alms from the government, but demanding compensation, till date they were the highest tax payers and would run hundreds of house holdings by providing employment to the youth," he said.
He also lashed at the center for not allowing the U.N Cell for Relief and Rehabilitation besides international community to surmount the losses to the traders in Kashmir.Mohammad Irfan, a Shopkeeper said, "The traders in Lal Chowk are A Circle Tax Payers, had the natural calamity not befallen us we would not have been after the rehabilitation Package," he lamented.
