Election fervor: Contesting candidates go on social networking overdrive | Project themselves as well-wisher of masses | | Nitesh Sangral

Jammu, Dec 10: As election fever has gripped Jammu and Kashmir, the social media became a hub of campaigning by political parties for the ongoing assembly elections. These days' political parties have been tapping social media in a big way to woo voters in the ongoing assembly polls. Pertinently, election campaigns were mostly restricted to rallies and hoardings decades ago, but now most of the political parties across the state are hopping on to the social networking sites, it's easily way to convey their political agenda and reach out to the masses. Nowadays the social media particularly Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blogs as well as Whatsaap groups are created by politicians and these indeed are drawing followers in large numbers. Smaller parties such as the Peoples Conference as well as independent candidates contesting from different constituencies across Kashmir are also following the suit of online campaigning on sites such as Facebook and Twitter to seek the attention of voters. The campaign by candidates of major political parties including National Conference (NC), Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and People's Democratic Party (PDP) is in full swing for the assembly elections and that too on social networking sites. Seeking votes for third term, Raman Bhalla of Congress, two times MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency and Minister in Omar Abdullah led coalition government, this time projected himself as next Deputy Chief Minister of the state, on his officials Facebook page namely 'Bhalla Brigade' claimed that 'one mission Bhalla for deputy chief minister of the state". BJP's Ramnagar candidate RS Pathania, who recently left Congress party promised to, set up 'Tourism Development Authority to exclusively cater the need of Ramban's tourism development. The another heavyweight leader and former advisor to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Devinder Singh Rana is busy in selling the concept of 'Nava Jammu' at Nagrota to the voters of the constituency these days, form where he is fighting the first Assembly election on of National Conference mandate. Similarly, Bharat Choudhary, who is consisting on PDP ticket from Jammu East constituency vowed to get inclusion of Jammu city in the list of 'Heritage cities. He also seeks votes to make Jammu East as an 'independent tourist destination' of the state. Another candidate from Jammu East, Vikram Malhotra, who is contestingon Congress mandate, seeks votes to transform the old city into modern one. A senior political analyst revealed that the social media has emerged as an effective and easy way to convey your message with an instant feedback. "Social media has dominated in today's age of technology and every individual particularly youth are more stick to it and this is the best medium to connect to the youth," he maintained and adding this is a fact that the leading politicians are connecting to the masses through twitter and other accounts. |
