Polling concludes peacefully for fifth phase

Kathua, Dec 20: The polling for fifth and last phase of assembly polls concluded peacefully in all five assembly segments of district Kathua. Long queues were seen in almost all polling centers of district Kathua including Bani, Billawar, Basohli, Hiranagar. The Assembly election for fifth and last phase has been concluded in J&K including district Kathua where a large number of people came out from their houses to exercise their votes even in low mercury and snowfall areas of Bani Tehsil. Dr Shaheed Iqbal Choudhary, DDC Kathua who is also Chief Election Officer Kathua, today informed that 77.7% voting turnout in district Kathua.
He informed that there were 645 polling stations where 190 were sensitive and 47 hyper sensitive. He added that web cam facilities was provided to 97 polling stations and SMSs facility was given to 115 polling station. According to CEO, Till 4 PM a total of 77.7% polling held in all 5 assembly constituencies of Kathua District wherein 83.2% in 63-Bani, 78.5 % in 64-Basohli, 75.4% in 65-Kathua, 77.5 % in 66-Billawar and in 67-Hiranagar 80.1 % polling reported so far. He added that elderly, handicapped and people from far- flung areas took active part in Bani constituency. He added that 82% turn out had been observed in border areas of Hiranagar constituency which was 17% more than last assembly election. The deficiency in the part of Returning Election Officer Kathua constituency today came into limelight when some Electronic Voting Machines got out of order in 65-39 polling center Floute, rural area of Kathua constituency. It is reported that EVMs machine got of order just after beginning of poll in the polling station. It is come into light that hundreds of people were waiting for their turn even in low mercury. When contacted to BLO, Prem Kumar informed that there were technical problems in the machines which showed extra digits, it was difficult to judge that whether present voter casted his vote or not. He was not sure about the votes casted by people before hurdle either considered to be valid or not. While interacting to media, Suman Verma, an employee & voter, exercised her vote at modern polling center 65-103 near Mukherjee Chowk. She enthusiastically appealed all others to come out and use their power to bring revolution in J&K politics. She added that people usually criticized the workings of their leaders after election but they had an opportunity to choose honest, hard worker and educated leader who had potentiality to redress their demands and sufferings.
