Drug addiction biggest threat after militancy: IGP AG Mir | | | Majid Nabi
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range Abdul Gani Mir here today said that that after militancy drug abuse has posed a serious threat in the Kashmir valley. "After militancy drug menace has posed a serious threat to our society, which might prove fatal if taken for granted," said IGP Mir during commemoration function for five years dedicated service of Police Drug De-Addiction Centre Services held at Gandhi Bhavan, Kashmir University here. The IGP who was also the chief guest on the occasion said that measures to counter mounting abuse are the need of the hour to keep younger generation away of the menace. "Our first priority would be to arrest the menace and rehabilitation of the affected people. The centre which was established seven years back has now grown up to Drug De-Addiction Services," said Mir. Lauding the efforts of Superintendent of Police (SP), Manoj Pandita for making things possible, Mir said that centre that has touched the new heights adding that this was not possible without the efforts of Manoj Pandita. He asked the people to extend their support to weed out the menace of drug addiction form the society. IGP said that the centre was established with the help of experts and psychologists and social workers of Srinagar. He said initially the capacity of this centre was 5 beds which in 2010 extended to 10 in 2010 and 19 at present. "I am very much interested with the results of the unit. These units have also taken up awareness programme in schools which will go a long way in arresting the menace. Two more drug de-addiction centres were opened in North Kashmir's Baramulla district and South Kashmir's Anatnag District," said IGP Mir. The IGP also appreciated the efforts of Directorate of Life Learning, University of Kashmir for toiling hard to make this unit successful. He said Drug de-addiction services were impossible without the active support of Directorate of Life Learning. Several other prominent personalities also spoke on the occasion and pinned hopes on police authorities for curbing drug menace. |
