Most of public, private establishments without fire fighting equipments in summer capital | | | Mudasir Tariq
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 10: While the Kashmir valley is witnessing an escalation of fire incidents every now and then, surprisingly most of the private and public sector establishments lack proper fire safety measurements. Despite issuing notices through media to implant fire extinguishers, both government and private institutions have failed to install them to avert any untoward incidents. "While several departments might have installed these extinguishers, there are many others which still await the installation, thus increasing the chances of being caught in the fire," said Ghulam Nabi, an official at Fire and Emergency Services department. Reportedly the situation is even worse in the shopping malls and business establishments which are more prone to fire incidents. It had come to notice that several shopping malls and big shops across the summer capital and its peripheries are without fire extinguishers. While some had installed the extinguishers but now they have turned non-functional. "This is misfortune, even after building huge malls they fail to install these fire extinguishers that can be very much handy in the times of crisis, this way they are playing with the lives of thousands of people who visit these places," said Mohammad Iqbal, a shopper. Meanwhile the main reason for the absence of fire safety equipment is said to be their operation. Many held that it is complicated to operate these equipments. "Even though it is installed in our department, just one person knows how to operate it. He remains absent most of the times and if God forbid something unfortunate happened, who will operate it," said Mohammad Ashraf, an employee with Power Development department. Another shopkeeper at Lal Chowk added the same views. He said, "We haven't kept any fire extinguisher since we started this shop. Shops don't keep it usually and it is much needed in offices and big houses. Besides a person has to be well trained to operate it, people here don't have much time for that." Majority of the hotels are without the fire fighting equipments despite the fact that fire incidents are common at such places. "We have a fire extinguisher in the ground floor of our hotel. I don't even know whether it is refilled or not. We have not kept them inside the rooms. The thing that matters is that it should be placed inside the building and is not necessary to keep it everywhere," said Bakhtawar Malik, an hotelier at Boulevard. |
