Soz launches membership drive to keep State unit under control | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 10: By announcing membership drive and the constitution of two provincial level committees for the same, the incumbent PCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz has played a smart move to foil his bête noire Ghulam Nabi Azad's attempt to dislodge him and control the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir. Following the debacle of Congress in the State Assembly elections, the Azad camp has been pressing for resignation of Prof Soz as PCC president. Further Prof Soz has only eight months left for completion of his tenure as head of the State unit while as per the party constitution, the PCC chief cannot be repeated for third time. Keeping in view of these facts, sources said that the Soz camp in State unit of Congress has played this clever move of launching membership drive and constituting the provincial committees having their own men. Pertinent to mention that Sham Lal Sharma is chairman of the membership committee for Jammu while the Kashmir committee is headed by G A Mir and maximum members in both the panels also belong to Soz camp. The membership drive is likely to be completed in next two to three months after which block and district committees of the Pradesh Congress will be constituted. Conducting membership drive through his loyalists would ensure election of own group members in the Block and District Committees and a control on the party even after a new PCC president takes over after completion of Soz's tenure, sources explained. Sources further said that the PCC president's move to keep Azad camp away from key positions in the party State unit has blessings of some senior leaders in the Congress high command, who are also believed to be the brain behind this idea. |
