Early Times Report
MENDHAR, Jan 17: The border troops, who have been put on high alert in J&K in view of the US President Barrack Obama's scheduled visit to New Delhi onJanuary 26, foiled second infiltration bid by the Pak-based terrorists from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sub-sector of Poonch in less than 24 hours. The first infiltration bid made by about 10 to 15 militants from Tarkundi forests of Balakote was foiled by alert troops at about 10 pm on Thursday. The second attempt was made by about 25 heavily armed militants from the same area at about 9 pm Friday night. The militants appeared on the Pak side of the LoC at about 10 pm on Friday in the forward Tarkundi forest area of Balakote, official sources said. When the alert troops challenged them, they opened indiscriminate fire which was returned. To provide them cover, Pak army also opened fire, the sources added. The intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides continued till 5 am today. Sources said though the militants managed to retreat into the Pak territory, it could not be known if there was any casualty on their part. After the firing ended, the troops laid a cordon around the area to further minimise the chances of infiltration by militants. In the morning, the troops launched a massive search operation in the area which was continuing when reports last came in. Sources said a tight vigil was being maintained all along the LoC and the International Border (IB) to foil any intrusion bid by the Pak-based militants. |
