SRINAGAR, Jan 17 : Twenty people including children and women were bitten by a rabid dog in Batmaloo area of the summer capital today. Eyewitnesses said the dog after appearing in the area bit a man from Tangmarg. The victim was identified as Ali Mohammad Dar. Some people chased away the dog but after a few minutes it reappeared and pounced on eight-year-old Madinah in interior Batmaloo. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition. SMHS Hospital sources said that twenty people came with dog bite injuries Saturday. Some of the injured have been identified as Abdul Mannan Mir, Abdul Salam Hajam, Tasleema, Momin, and Sakeena, all residents of Batamaloo, Shehnawaz Ali Bhat of Balhama, Manzoor Ahmad of Budgam, Aqib Javed of Gojwara, Ulfat, Sara Begum, Rizwan Ahmed, Suhail Ahmad Beig, Moham-mad Shafi, Zoona Begum and Ravinder Singh a truck driver from Punjab, were treated for dog bites. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Shah assured proper and immediate action. Stray dogs have been a source of nuisance in the city for the past few years. According to hospital data around 12 thousand people have been bitten by dogs in the past four years. The people while expressing anger accused the concerned authorities of playing with the lives of the people.
