| Let BJP & PDP stop quarrelling over a trifle | | A case of much ado about nothing | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 11: It seems to be a case of much ado about nothing.It is a case of misunderstanding between the PDP and the BJP.The two parties that have forged an alliance for providing good governance to the people of Jammu and Kashmir have different ideology and outlook.The result of this diverse outlook is manifested in the row over the release of a separatist, Masarat Alam. And it is the outcome of conflict between the two partners in power that Masarat Alam has become an important political figure. He has added more political weight on his shoulders than is expected from a separatist of his stature.
Yes,he has remained in the thick of a controversy since the civilian strife that gripped Kashmir in the summer months of 2010 in which about 120 people were killed in clashes between the protesters and the security forces.On charge of having engineered the strife and having incited people to violence Alam had been detained under the PSA.Now he has been released as per the court order and the Mufti led Government simply directed the Director General of Police to expedite release of Masarat Alam.
In fact the order for his release had been issued on February 4 when the state was under the Governor's rule.And in reality the order had been finalised in December when the state had the NC led coalition Government.This should have left no room for resentmen of the BJP against the Mufti.Soon after his release the conflict between the PDP and the BJP heightened with the opposition ridiculing the BJP in the Lok Sabha for having been supporting the PDP out of lust for power.
And Alam has become the man at the centre of the growing tension in the PDP-BJP coalition, whose release caused a furore in Parliament.But he , sits in a room full of people, meeting friends, speaking to journalists, and shaking hands with party workers. And he talks of returning to his "normal" life outside prison .
Alam is grateful to God as his detention and consequent release have caused a big debate in political circles,in parliament,in the country and in Jammu and Kashmir., Having become aware of his rise from oblivion to importance Masarat Alam lambasts the Government of India for having started harbouring fears over the fallout on the security situation following his release.This way one does question those political parties that joined hands for berating Mufti Mohd.Sayeed for having ordered release of Masarat Alam because the very noise and ruckus these political parties created in Parliament and outside have given added importance to Masarat Alam.
Even if one accepts the argument of the critics of Mufti Sayeed and of the BJP that Alam's release could create political and security instability in Jammu and Kashmir one does feel amused over the fact that Masarat Alam could be arrested again once he was found indulging in some nefarious activities.And the PDP does not accept to have committed any error in setting Alam free because the Chief Minister had ordered the police to release Masarat Alam after the court had quashed his detention.This has given an opportunioty to the PDP to remain unfazed by the controversy over the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam, The PDP has said the Jammu and Kashmir government will abide by the court directives on the release of political prisoners. But the BJP said it had a "zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and separatism" and did not agree with the release.
Whatever the Supreme Court and courts tell the Government, it will abide by that (on release of political prisoners in future)", according to senior PDP leader and State Minister for Sports Imran Raza Ansari.Hence the BJP does not have any reason to feel enraged over the release of Masarat Alam.Yes,the BJP has a point.Once the PDP leadership found that the entire opposition in the Parliament had started berating the BJP and the PDP for the release of Masarat Alam it should have ordered his rearrest on various other charges.If one goes by records one would find that many political activists were released and later rearrested even before they had walked out of the jail gates
Rearresting Masarat Alam should have not been found highly unconstitutional and illegal because the Government has powers to take anybody into preventive custody in case his presence was deemed to threaten peace. If the PDP leadership says that it released Masarat Alam under court order the PDP deserves the benefit of doubt.
The second aspect of the issue.The security forces,the state and central Government agencies had effectively tackled Pakistan sponsored proxy war during the last over two decades.It is because of the plan of the security agencies that the political and security situation is back to normal in Jammu and Kashmir.Hence release of Msarat Alam could have hardly endangered peace.Scores of separatist leaders are freely roaming in Kashmir and when they have not been able destabilize peace how could Alam prove a threat to peace and security stability ?
If Masarat Alam had engineered civil strife and incited people to resort to violence he had got punishment for that as he had spent over four years in prison.Let the BJP and PDP stop feuding over a trifle so that the ruling coalition is able to provide good governance. |
