JAMMU, May 7 : Stanzin Youthog, a senior mountaineer of Mountaineering Association of J&K has been selected by Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi, the apex national body for adventure sports, for an all women expedition to peak Bhagirathi-III (6454m) in Garhwal Himalaya, Uttarkhand.
The month-long prestigious national expedition to be fully sponsored by Indian Mountaineering Foundation shall be organised from May 28 to June 28.
It may be mentioned here that Bhagirathi-III is the most impressive peak in Garhwal Himalaya. The route to the peak follows 1000 meter of vertical granite followed by another 200 meter section of mixed rock and ice and a top part of steep ice. Hence to summit this formidable peak the challenge lies in its technical difficulty rather than its height.
Pertinent to mention here that Stanzin Youthog, a constable in J&K Armed Police, is a leading climber of our state having the distinction of being the first Indian girl along with two other climbers to scale Shivling peak, technically a very difficult peak, in 2010.
"Since then she has not looked back and has been scaling peak after peak every year. However, in the year 2013 she had a narrow escape on an expedition to Bhagirathi-II peak (6512) in Uttarakhand when the Mother Nature turned hostile and she had to trek nonstop for 100 kms without food and shelter to reach a safe place," informed general secretary of J&K Mountaineering Association, Ram Khajuria.
He congratulated Stanzin Youthog on her selection in a prestigious national mountaineering expedition amidst announcement to give a grand send off to the celebrated mountaineer in a function to be organised before her departure for the mountain. |
