Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 28: National Conference's provincial president for Jammu and party president Omar Abdullah's close confidant, Devender Singh Rana, has put the party in a tight spot after he voiced his support for setting up AIIMS in Jammu.
Sources said that Rana's demand for AIIMS has invoked anger in the camp with the party veterans distancing themselves from Rana's demand.
NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said that if a local leader of any party makes any statement it cannot be endorsed as that of the party. "We have not issued (at the party level) any statement over granting of AIIMS in Jammu and Kashmir. We are yet to meet and discuss the strategy. The party has not made any statement over the issue yet," Sagar said recently. The statement came in the wake of Rana's repeated jibes at the government over not granting AIIMS to Jammu region. Party sources said that Rana is trying to fish in the troubled waters and striving to elevate himself as the leader of Jammu region.
"As they say 'do in Rome what the Romans do', Rana claims to be leading from the front for demanding AIIMS for Jammu region. But other side of the picture is that his statements and lectures are proving counterproductive for him with his party in open denouncing what Rana has been saying," the sources said.
The said that NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah has asked his son Omar to rein in his friend Rana, telling him to remain silent over contentious issue. "The fact is that NC is a Valley-based party and has a meagre support in Jammu region of the state. The recent statements of Rana are acting as the spoilsport that too at a time when NC was badly mauled during the recent state election. We cannot allow the notion to surface that we are against granting of AIIMS to Kashmir valley. We are trying to establish the equal share for all the three regions of Jammu and Kashmir," one of the NC leaders said while pleading anonymity.
