Peerzada Ummer Early Times Report srinagar, Aug 7: Ever since it got the drubbing during the Assembly polls, desperate attempts by the state Congress to grab media attention is proving counterproductive for the party, with contradictory statements coming out every day, revealing the chaos within. The party which got squeezed to mere 12 seats from 21, is these days leaving no stone unturned to stay relevant by issuing statements, sometimes asking Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to end his alliance with the BJP and other times terming the government a 'lame duck'. The attempt of state Congress chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir surprised least the observers in the state when in the recent past, he openly declared his party's support to PDP for government formation. "Mufti Sahib, what are you waiting for? Withdraw support and we are ready to accord you unconditional help so that you would continue to remain the CM," was how Mir tried to make it to front page of local newspapers. "It is a common sense that what Mir said about support to PDP was not practically possible. It was just a jibe at PDP-BJP bonhomie," Mir's close aide admitted to Early Times. He said the party has a one-point agenda: to remain in news. "People here have a very short memory. All we want to is play the role of a good opposition. This is the reason that we even are ready to coordinate with the National Conference which has 15 seats in the House," another Congress worker said. Also, for the past two months Mir has been demanding AIIMS for Jammu but in the same breath is confusing masses about whether to welcome it for the Valley or not. "It is like getting caught between the devil and the deep sea. The Congress wants to strengthen its base both in Jammu as well as in the Valley, and probably is more confused about what to prioritize and what to ignore," said the party worker. There seems to be one more controversy in the offing for the Congress as its senior vice president Ghulam Nabi Monga has pitched for IIT, IIMC AND IIM for Kashmir valley. Raising pitch for granting IIT and IIM for Kashmir, Monga said, "We are not against granting of AIIMS to Jammu but at the same time want IIT and IIM for Kashmir. There should be no regional imbalance or inequality in the developmental initiatives." Out of all the statements, allegations and jibes, one could easily understand the desperation of Congress to remain relevant in JK's political spectrum. |
