Rajouri: PWD to construct 1-km road to BJP worker's house | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 7: The Public Works Department in Rajouri district is allegedly planning to resort to "land grab" for construction of one kilometer long road only to benefit a BJP worker living in a remote area. Sources in the PWD said a BJP leader wielding influence in the constituency was behind the plot to get the road forcibly constructed so that his worker is benefitted at the cost of others. On the instructions of the politicians from the ruling coalition, sources said, Junior Engineer, PWD, Vinay Kumar recently visited Nahoti falling under panchayat Nallah Makool and threatened the villagers to give away considerable portion of land for construction of a "vital road" in the area. The villagers argued that the government has already built a road to their village from Barnara to Nahoti. On this the PWD official said the road needs to be expanded to one more village. On inquiring the villagers got to know that the government wants to construct road not for any village but to the house of one BJP worker who is the sole inhabitant of that area and lives there with his family. The worker is understood to have a prepared a fake application for road with names of scores villagers who don't exist. The villagers whose land was coming in way of the project argued that how could government construct a long road by spending millions to benefit mere one family when scores of villages in Rajouri district inhabited by hundreds of poor families continue to be without roads. On this the locals said the PWD officials threatened them that if they don't give away their land, they would be booked under FIR by police. This infuriated the villagers. Their delegation subsequently rushed to the office of Divisional Engineer PWD Vikram Singh to register their complaint. Sources said the DE expressed shock over the demand of land for construction of road in their area. Sources said the DE at once rang up the JE asking him how he was planning to construct a road without proper permission from the concerned authorities. Sources said the JE couldn't give a convincing reply, which hinted that he was under political influence. Finding a threat to their land holdings, a delegation of residents including Joginder Paul, Babu Ram, Rajinder Kumar and Dhani Ram approached other higher authorities saying that they would never give away their land to benefit the political worker. The matter is understood to have come to the notice of PWD Minister AR Veeri who assured the villagers that the road which would benefit a single political family would not be constructed. "I will definitely look into the matter and assure the villagers that no road will be constructed to benefit a single family no matter how influential he or she is in the political circles," the PWD minister told Early Times. |
