Authorities impose curfew, restrictions to foil 'Jamia Masjid Chalo' call of separatists | | | Jehangir Rashid

SRINAGAR, Nov 11: Authorities foiled 'Jamia Masjid Chalo' call of separatists by imposing curfew and restrictions in some areas of summer capital of city and other areas of Kashmir valley. The situation remained by and large normal across the valley. The state government imposed curfew in areas falling under police stations of Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Batmaloo. At the same time curfew like restrictions were imposed in Budgam, Kupwara, Handwara and Sopore areas in Central and North Kashmir. Elsewhere, restrictions under Section 144 were imposed. Reports said that chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was arrested by the police when he tried to march towards Jamia Masjid located in Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar. Mirwaiz was arrested by the police and taken to nearby police station of Nigeen. Mirwaiz had been placed under house arrest by the authorities on Thursday evening and he had been asked not to venture out of his house. Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik was also arrested by the police on Thursday and since then he has been shifted to Central Jail, Srinagar. Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani continues to be under house arrest at his residence at Hyderpora. Due to the continuous curfew congregational Friday prayers could not be offered at the Jamia Masjid. Friday prayers have been barred at Jamia Masjid since July 9 this year. Reports from Pulwama said that clashes erupted in Tahab area of the district. Reports from Bandipora said that authorities foiled a rally in Aloosa area of the district. Three youth were reportedly arrested during the police action against the protestors. Clashes erupted between protestors and forces after the rally was disallowed. Clashes also erupted in main town of Bandipora. Clashes erupted in Beerwah town of Central Kashmir's Budgam district. Reports said that hundreds of youth clashed with security forces after the latter stopped their march. Security forces fired dozens of pepper and tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. A police spokesman said that except for a few minor stone pelting incidents in Pulwama and Shopian, overall situation across the valley remained peaceful and under control. As a precautionary measure restrictions were imposed in some areas of Srinagar city. "During the day normal life was observed generally in the most parts of valley. Vehicles both public and private were seen plying on city roads as well as in main towns and on the inter-district roads. The shops/vendors in parts of Srinagar city and other towns were also seen doing their business," said the spokesman. The spokesman said that necessary security deployment was made in some vulnerable points in Srinagar and also in main towns of the valley to prevent any possible untoward incident disturbing normal life and smooth flow of traffic. |
