It means BJP really means it | Police reorganisation | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 11: The opposition of the BJP to the proposal of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti seeking reservation of 25 per cent reservation for the local Superintendents of Police and Senior Superintendents of Police at the DIG and IGP level without their being IPS is real. It has become very clear. There are reasons to believe that the BJP ministers in the Mehbooba Mufti are unlikely to relent as it is the PMO and the party high command which have "directed" them not to yield and ensure that the "whole move of the PDP is punctured and defeated". Sources in the party said: "The issue of police reorganization is very sensitive" and "it would be suicidal for the Government of India to endorse the move of the PDP-BJP led government in Jammu & Kashmir. The moment the BJP approved the proposal of the Jammu & Kashmir Home Minister and 25 per cent posts at the level of DIGs and IGPs are reserved in the state, other states would also jump into the arena and demand similar regime. The Government of India cannot afford to oblige the PDP as it has very serious ramifications at the national level". That the BJP really means it became absolutely clear on Saturday when none other than Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh defended his party's stand and restated what he had reportedly said on Friday in the Cabinet meeting from which the "angry and fuming" Chief Minister walked out. "Our take was simple that it is a DoPT issue, posts cannot be given without induction into IPS. BJP is not opposed to financial and monetary benefits and grades to KPS officers, but objects to giving ranks. There is vacancy of 50 IPS officers for past five years. Their inductions have been caught into litigation. We did not take any initiative in this regard. If it is resolved, over 50 officers would be inducted into it," Nirmal Singh said in Jammu while clearing his party's stand on the issue which has brought the PDP and the BJP face to face with each other. All this should indicate that the BJP is not going to kneel. It is a difficult situation for the PDP, notwithstanding the statement of Finance Minister Haseeb Drabu that a Cabinet Sub-Committee has been constituted to discuss the whole issue and reach some consensus. |
