Rs 2000 note gives headache to people | | | Nitesh Sangral Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's bold move to curb black money by demonetising Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has been largely welcomed by people of Jammu, but many people are facing difficulties in getting small currency notes for buying essentials. Besides, most ATMs are dried up or dispensing big currency Rs 2,000 note. "Most of the ATMs go 'dead' after a few transactions. These new Rs 2,000 notes are giving headaches to the people who are finding it tough to spend the high-value currency in the markets," said an ATM guard Ram Sharma. He said a number of people enquire about the currency available before visiting the ATM and then leave without making any transaction as the ATMs dish out only Rs 2000 notes. Appreciating government of India's demonetisation move, Ajay Dogra said people are facing problems getting change for spending small amounts. The only option for people right now is to either spend or buy goods worth Rs. 2000 full as insufficient change is available in the market. "The situation has taken a turn for the worse. Customers come with the new Rs 2,000 note to buy things, but due to unavailability of sufficient change, our sales have been affected," said Amar Singh, a shopkeeper. Singh estimated that business has gone down by almost 50 percent in the wake of demonization. Slamming the lethargic approach of Reserve Bank of India's Jammu branch, as result number of ATMs not functional properly or dispensing Rs 2,000, a spokesman of Bhagat Singh Force Trust said the RBI has to control situation but it's acting as a mute spectator. "Members of Trust included DS Musafir, Ajay, Manav, Geeta Thakur, Muskan Sharma and others met with GM, RBI Jammu and appraised him problems being faced by people of Jammu, said the spokesman DS Musafir said, adding that the pleas have fallen on deaf ears. He said the government's decision is appreciable but the working of the RBI is not up to the mark due to which people are now faced with a new problem: finding change for the new Rs 2,000 being dispensed by ATMs and withdrawn from banks. |
