srinagar, Mar 5: Exploitation of the professionals like engineers may be unheard of in the outside world, but it is a reality in Jammu & Kashmir. The exploitation is resulting in a brain drain of young and fertile brains from the state.
A group of young engineers working on the construction of two and half kilometers long Jehangir Chowk-Rambagh (JCRB) flyover told Early Times that they are being under paid by the executing agency. These engineers said that they are earning much less than unskilled labourers in the state.
"We are forced to work for more than 12 hours in a day and when it comes to receiving the emolument the same is minimal. Despite having degrees and diplomas in the engineering field we are treated just like ordinary labourers. The ordinary labourers in fact earn more than us on monthly basis," said the engineers.
The engineers said that due to the sheer 'exploitation' many of their accomplices decided not to work on the construction of JCRB flyover and shifted to outside the state in order to work. They said that the executing agency should have not different standards when it comes to paying the engineers.
It has been learnt from sources that although the young engineers are paid the salary in few thousands the elderly engineers are receiving fat salaries. The discrimination in the salary of engineers has led to resentment among the young engineers working on a reputed project of the state.
"It is an irony that the retired engineers who have been engaged in the construction of JCRB flyover are receiving fat salaries. On the other side the young engineers have been left high and dry since they are not being paid adequate amount as salary. The same has led to disillusionment among the young fertile brains in the field of engineering," said sources.
Sources said that most of the young engineers are so frustrated that they don't want to work on the construction of the JCRB flyover. However, due to the pressure from their family members especially parents these young engineers have been forced to stay put and for the time being they are working here.
"Over the years we have been debating a lot over the brain drain, but very few among us have gone deep into the issue. If professionals like engineers are exploited how we can expect them to stay in the state. This trend needs to be arrested at the earliest so that engineers and professionals in other fields are encouraged to stay back," said sources.
Sources said that since many opportunities are available to professionals like engineers outside state they deem it fit to move out and carve out a niche for them. The 'exploitation' on salary front needs to be stopped in case the state wants to exploit the skills of engineers.
