Department of Ecology organises excursion

Jammu, Mar 10: To sensitize students about ecological concerns confronting humanity and various global, national, local initiatives undertaken by Govt, Ecological Excursion was organized by Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing at Environment Park Raika Jammu.
More than 500 students took round of the park and understood ecology of Shivaliks. Intimate associations of plants and animals with microbial diversity are vital for the growth of forest trees .Many animals have specific dependence on specific plants & trees highlighting the local examples ,Director Ecology , Environment O P Sharma Vidyarthi shared that bird Kalmoonhaa depends on Kamilla fruits, Raunsa Mrig depends on Skimmia leaves, Red Panda on bamboo, Fig wasps on Fig trees.
On the occasion best Eco-stall display trophies were awarded by Manoj Pant Chief Guest PCCF Wildlife, first position award presented to SFRI, 2nd position award to Govt Ayurvedic Hospital Jammu and 3rd position to Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu .While interacting with students, Chief Wildlife Warden detailed the need for ex-situ conservation of plants and animals through Botanical / herbal repositories and captive breeding programme undertaken in Indian zoos.
Brij Mohan Sharma Director State Forest Institute shared inputs on poaching, smuggling, illicit tree felling and encroachment issue and appealed civic society to extend support in the interest of better wildlife management.
