Mentally unwell people need a healing touch
6/8/2018 11:42:34 PM
Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, June 8: In Srinagar's old city lies the lone Psychiatric Hospital of Kashmir, catches attention of every person and makes them believe that this hospital is a healing place for those who are mentally unfit. But this hospital lacks everything.
There are many people who after getting healed need rehabilitation which is not available.
An official said there are patients who need to be rehabilitated but due to lack of a centre inmates are lodged with serious disorders.
"The chronic ones are put in the mental asylum and remain exposed to many problems. We treat them and also work as custodians here," a doctor said.
Officials said, the hospital lacks rehabilitation centre for the treated patients. They said, the full-fledged rehabilitation centre was need of the hour as education and vocational activities there could help the patients to earn their livelihood.
"Such type of patients carry stigma in social life. Their kith and kin refuse to own them though they stand cured and need engagement, so the hospital needs to have a rehabilitation centre for such patients," officials said.
Presently, the Psychiatric Hospital has strength of 150-beds and around 90-patients are admitted there.
However, sources said, no attention has been given towards this hospital by the government in these years, which is craving for attention and to provide better health care to these patients.
They said, the hospital is supposed to receive 24-hour power supply. However, there are frequent power cuts, owing to which the hospital work gets hampered and machines remain non-functional.
The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) had also castigated the State Government over poor patient care and lack of basic amenities at the hospital.
"Nothing such has been done in this regard. The patients are not given healthy breakfast," official said.
The wards of the hospital are also in bad shape and emanate stinky.
According to him, psychiatric rehabilitation promotes recovery, community integration, and improved quality of life for persons diagnosed with the mental health condition that seriously impairs their ability to lead meaningful lives.
Psychiatric rehabilitation services are collaborative, person-directed and individualized service. These services are the essential element of the health care and human services spectrum.
"Vocational rehabilitation services exist to help mentally ill people find work. Traditionally, these services have offered a period of preparation (Pre-vocational Training), before trying to place clients in competitive (i.e. open) employment," he said.
